Definiens Developer XD complements the approach to processing image information via a hierarchical network of image objects with an extensive set of classical layer operations and filtering procedures acting with kernel windows on individual pixels. This allows for the incorporation of image-preprocessing steps, adding the whole bandwidth of well-known morphology operations, and can provide significant performance benefits. The user has the freedom to choose among different options.

In order to fit layer operations into the paradigm of Definiens Cognition Network Technology seamlessly, the domain concept was applied to individual pixels, too. For instance, filter operations are only applied constrained by the classification of a specific area.
