Definiens Cognition Network Technology® provides a segmentation- and network-based image analysis approach, which offers a large range of features beyond conventional pixel-based descriptors. The extent to which additional information that can be extracted from an image, after segmenting it into a hierarchical network of inter-linked image objects, is unrivalled.

Image objects have intrinsic characteristics such as shape, morphology or color. By taking into account attributes of an image object’s local network, Definiens Cognition Network Technology® additionally can provide valuable relational and contextual information. These characteristics, or attributes, are called  Features in Definiens software. The local network can consist of neighboring objects, sub-objects or super-objects, for instance, where each case can be further specified through (hierarchical) distance and object domain. If standard attributes in the tool box are not sufficient to analyze a specific problem, users can easily customize an unlimited number of additional features to provide maximal flexibility for any kind of image analysis task.

Features and their values are available both through the Image Object Information window, where the user can display any number of feature values per object, and as a color-coded overlay of the original image data. Both approaches are useful for rule set development, deciding which features to use for classification and where to set thresholds.

The features in Definiens Developer XD are very powerful when used as endpoints of an analysis process and for export. They are especially important, however, in the dynamic course of the segmentation process, when users must resolve ambiguities often or when context is needed to trigger specific segmentation decisions. In these cases, the total number of features available in Definiens Developer XD matters less than the variety, ensuring that the user will find the one feature that will effectively separate one class of objects from another.
