Definiens Developer XD

Definiens Developer XD is an integrated development environment used by scientists as well as image analysis experts to create and test image analysis solutions for the entire range of biomedical image analysis problems. This includes any imaging modality as well as 2D, 3D and time lapse applications. Cases that previously could only be addressed qualitatively by the human observer or by tedious manual segmentation can now be automated.

The ability to perform fully automated quantification over large batches of images enables new experimental approaches and workflows in many contexts, including digital pathology or assay development.

The underlying Definiens Cognition Network Technology® allows users to process image information and to tackle segmentation problems via a dynamic, hierarchical network of what are known as “image objects,” groups of pixels identified in specific context within a larger image. To efficiently work with Definiens Cognition Network Technology®, Definiens Developer XD provides a meta language, the Cognition Network Language. It can be conveniently edited through a graphical editor. For an overview on the large portfolio of available procedures and methods, please read the section Algorithms. 

At the same time, a comprehensive set of tools supports the visualization of image data and image objects, and of all relevant information needed for efficient rule set writing. The development process is very interactive and facilitates rapid prototyping: Any new line of code will result in direct visual feedback concerning the actual state of extracted image objects.

Definiens Developer XD allows the creation of rule sets for batch mode processing using the Definiens Server software. It also offers the ability to establish libraries of analysis modules for specific application fields, which end users can configure in a simple interactive way within the Definiens Architect software. Recently, a number of rule sets developed by Definiens users were validated for usage in regulated and clinical environments.

For training on Definiens Developer XD, the Definiens Academy offers a comprehensive educational program, which includes self-study materials and instructor-led courses. After completing the entry-level training, beginners are able to perform analyses beyond conventional image analysis approaches.
